2023 Japan Deep-Sea Collaboration & Longliner Partnership Expedition

In collaboration with Beneath the Waves, this mission took Seas Your Dreams to Yaizu, Japan, in support of deep-sea shark research and cross-cultural conservation efforts. The expedition focused on understanding deep-water shark species and the critical role of collaboration in ocean science — even with groups not traditionally aligned, such as longliners.

The team joined local longline fishing operations to collect valuable biological and ecological data from species rarely accessible by conventional research methods. Through cooperation and respect, this mission highlighted that true progress in conservation requires working across boundaries — combining local expertise with scientific purpose.

The expedition also tested deep-drop camera systems at depths between 600–800 meters, capturing rare footage of deep-sea organisms including isopods and other unique species. These studies provided insight into biodiversity at extreme depths and expanded the dataset for ongoing global ocean research.

Beyond the fieldwork, the Japan trip also served as an opportunity to connect with local culture — from exploring the streets, temples, and cuisine to understanding the country’s coastal communities and their relationship with the sea.

This mission perfectly embodied Seas Your Dreams’ global vision: to support and collaborate with aligned nonprofits, advancing marine research through shared discovery, education, and respect for local knowledge.
