2022 Highborn Bahamas Carbon Sequestration & Seagrass Surveys

This mission focused on exploring remote seagrass beds throughout the Bahamas’ out-islands to collect core samples and measure the carbon storage potential of these vital marine ecosystems. The primary scientific goal was to assess how much atmospheric carbon is sequestered in ocean grass flats—a key indicator in understanding blue carbon’s role in climate mitigation.

Seas Your Dreams supported this initiative by providing high-speed vessel access aboard Miss Sophia, which significantly enhanced the range and efficiency of the operation. While the research vessel Tigress R/V offered advanced scientific equipment, its limited speed (12 knots) constrained coverage. Miss Sophia, reaching over 60 MPH, enabled the scientific team to access hard-to-reach areas across wide geographic zones quickly.

Beyond the primary objective of core sampling, this expedition also offered opportunities for exploration and discovery. Teams visited isolated islands inhabited by iguanas, dove on the iconic Escobar Plane wreck, observed the famous swimming pigs, and even encountered a newborn octopus—reminders that scientific work and wonder often go hand in hand.

This mission reflects Seas Your Dreams’ commitment to advancing marine science while creating opportunities for exploration, education, and unforgettable experiences in ocean conservation.
