2019 Expedition Summary

2019 Expedition Summary Shark Tagging and Data Collection in Exuma Bahamas

In collaboration with Beneath the Waves and Grand Isle Resort, our team conducted a research expedition in Exuma, Bahamas, focused on the region’s Tiger Shark population. The primary objective was to catch and tag large sharks with satellite and acoustic transmitters to track movement, behavior, and environmental data in real time. These tags collect vital information such as depth, speed, temperature, and behavioral patterns, and transmit the data to strategically placed underwater receivers or via satellite when the sharks surface.

Additionally, camera tags were deployed on select individuals to capture 8–12-hour footage, offering rare insight into the daily life of these apex predators. These visual records are now part of Beneath the Waves’ digital content and outreach.

This mission not only advanced scientific understanding but also supported educational outreach through Seas Your Dreams, which designed interactive guest experiences at Grand Isle Resort. These sessions highlighted the importance of shark research and its role in marine ecosystem conservation, especially in identifying and protecting endangered zones.

This expedition exemplifies our commitment to both data-driven research and public education in ocean conservation.
